Space Traveler Reveals Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the period after the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Now, eight months after reaching space, she has stated the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the supporters whose support pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that passed the edge of outer space.
